Forsaken by Man, Sustained by God

I want to share what can happen when you choose to honour God, even when the cost feels unbearable.

Ten years ago, I was a university student in the Caribbean with very little to my name. Out of love and concern, my family approached a respected member of our community for financial assistance. The person agreed to help cover my accommodation and living expenses. At the time, it seemed like an answer to prayer. It felt as though God had opened a door.

But the enemy rarely appears as an obvious threat. More often, he appears as an opportunity. Scripture warns us of exactly this. Paul writes that Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), and I would come to understand that verse from the inside.

A few months later, the help came with conditions. This individual began requesting favours that were not just carnal in nature, but also illegal. I refused.

The moment I refused, every cent of financial support disappeared: I could no longer pay my rent, I struggled to afford food, and I stood on the brink of abandoning my studies altogether. Not because I had done something wrong, but because I had chosen to do what was right.

If you are a young man reading this, consider that carefully. Obedience appeared to cost me everything. Hebrews 12:11 says that all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant in the moment, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. I was living in that painful moment, with no sight of the fruit.

In that season, I wrestled with confusion and disappointment. I believed this person had been sent by God. I questioned whether I had misunderstood His leading. I wondered whether faithfulness was worth the cost. I was afraid, uncertain, and often hungry.

What I could not see at the time was that God had not abandoned me. He was preparing to reveal His faithfulness in a way I would never forget, because He had already declared through Jeremiah that His plans for us are plans to prosper and not to harm, to give us a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

Prompted by what I can only describe as a quiet leading from the Holy Spirit, I began applying for scholarships. That year, I received every scholarship for which I applied.
The provision was extraordinary. My tuition was fully paid. My accommodation was covered. I received a monthly stipend for living expenses. So much funding was deposited into my university account that the institution contacted me to explain that unused funds would have to be returned to donors unless I found a way to use them. I eventually moved into one of the most prestigious residence halls on campus.
In a single season, God took me from the edge of homelessness to a place of abundance. He was doing, as Paul puts it, immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power at work within us (Ephesians 3:20). God did not merely meet my needs. He exceeded them, openly and abundantly, in a way that could not be attributed to my own influence, connections, or ability.

To every young man reading this: there will be moments when integrity appears costly. Times when refusing the wrong opportunity seems to close every door. Seasons when you cannot see how God will provide. Hold your ground. What God has ordained for your life cannot be withheld by another person. No individual controls the provision He has assigned to you. When one door closes, God is not caught off guard. He has already made provision beyond what you can see. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well (Matthew 6:33).
