Philippians 3:13–14
“Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark…”
Paul understood what it meant to have a past.
Before becoming a follower of Jesus Christ, he had persecuted believers and supported the imprisonment of Christians. Those events could not be erased from history. Yet when Paul writes to the Philippians, he refuses to spend the rest of his life living backwards. He says, “Forgetting those things which are behind… I press toward the mark.”
Paul was not pretending the past never happened. He remembered his former life and spoke honestly about it elsewhere. But he refused to allow yesterday to become the address where he permanently lived.
Men, your past may explain how you arrived here, but it does not have to determine where you go next.
For some men, the past includes a conviction, a prison sentence and decisions with serious consequences. You may have harmed people. Trust may need rebuilding. Relationships may need repairing. Some consequences cannot simply disappear.
Grace does not rewrite history as though nothing happened.
But grace can rewrite what happens next.
Other men are imprisoned by failures nobody else knows about. Years have passed, but internally they are still standing at the scene of the mistake—replaying what happened, carrying shame and believing they can never become more than what they once were.
Paul gives us another direction: forward.
In Christ, repentance opens the door to transformation. Your worst decision does not have to become your permanent identity. God can take a man who has caused damage and teach him to build. He can take a man who has wasted years and teach him to use the years that remain wisely.
Men, take responsibility for yesterday, but don’t surrender tomorrow to it.
You cannot walk forward while continually living backwards.
Your past is part of your story, but it doesn’t have to become your address. By God’s grace, there is still something ahead worth pressing towards.
God bless you, Men of God. Continue in your roar
